Joel grew up outside of Washington, D. C. and had formal training in oil painting at Corcoran School of Art and other private classes. He has also studied sculpture and ceramics at Alfred University. He is a member of Washington Island Art Association.

For the past eight years, he has worked exclusively in pastels. Joel tries to emphasize movement and light in his drawings. The Midwest provides a wonderful range of landscapes and watersides, which can be founds in his compositions.

Joel is a psychologist and works with chronically ill children and adults, which has taught him beauty and sense of clarity that can emerge from darkness. Dark pastel papers bring depth and vibrancy to artwork, allowing us to appreciate what is on and beneath the surface. Joel presently resides in Waunakee, Wisconsin.
