"Salute To Our Spirits"

This painting was created as a "salute to our spirits." It is a salute to
the spirit of the people of Waunakee who worked so hard to restore the old
Railroad Depot so that it looks today as it is shown in this painting. It
is a salute to the beautiful red and gray train, "The Spirit of Wisconsin,"
and finally, it is a salute to the flag of the United States of America,
which symbolizes the spirit of our wonderful Country.

"Old Soldier"

Year after year, this old McCormick Deering tractor has stood its post on
the crest of a ridge along what is now Arboretum Drive just south of
Waunakee. From this observation point it has been witness to the changing
seasons, and also the changing scenery as Savannah Village takes shape in
the background.

This old soldier, when in its prime, must have toiled in the fields and
served on the farm before being furloughed to stand its lonely watch. This
steadfast sentry stands as a contrast to the development taking place all
around it, but at the same time the soft green, gray and brown colors of it
aging iron harmonizes beautifully with the natural surroundings.

The painting that you are viewing was created by Gladys Grieger from the old black and white photo. Information was given to Gladys from the family that lived on the farmstead from 1942 until 1959. Notice how the artist has completed the barn that was under construction at the time the photo was taken. By interviewing the family, Gladys was able to paint the scene in full color, and has added many special touches that bring back fond memories for the family that lived here.
